Chez Janou is a bustling restaurant near Place des Vosges on a quiet corner street. It had been recommended to me by my tour guide from Paris Walks, a fabulous small-scale operation whose employees are fantastic storytellers and veteran Parisians.
On a night like this, the place is packed with locals vying for a table. Being alone, it was relatively easy for me to snag a spot. To some my tiny high-traffic table would be undesirable, but for my purposes it was the perfect thing!
My app was a tasty, much-needed salad for a stomach deprived of vegetables. Bursting with the flavour of balsamic it featured buffalo mozzarella, cherry tomato, various mellons and cured ham.
The duck dish was brilliant. Best meat I have had on the trip thus far. Perfectly cooked to pink with rich, melting skin, though kept at bay due to a refreshing cassis and red wine reduction. It sat on a bed of garlicy roast potato with mushroom drenched in butter. The definition of "foodgasam" is eating this dish as Eric Idle's ode to happiness blasts through the speakers of a bustling dinner service in Paris. It's true, look it up.
Finally was my dessert of Red Berries, served in a cup with juice and vanilla. Simple perfection.
In fact, the meal was so terrific that I indulged in a 3 course lunch the very next day.
Wonderful glimpses into your notebook, and great food photography too. Like!
