Hold That Pose, Porky!

Good animal sketching is a scarce commodity when you live in the core of the city. The best one can hope to draw are squirrels, pigeons and tiny dogs wrapped in cashmere coats. Skunks are a really bad idea, or so I'm told.

That's why The Royal Winter Fair is so popular with the sketchbook set. Most artists are introduced to the fair in college where, as students, they are bussed in to study the animals up close. This tradition still holds strong today as the Fair welcomes a new generation of artists who are trying to capture a moving animal for the first time.

This high schooler broke rank to draw some Hampshire swine.

A teenage girl places her hand through the gate to pat a sheep.

This toddler was completely fascinated by the hogs. His mom turned to me and said, "I don't know why! He just loves pigs!"

Sheep shearing is always ridiculously fun to draw.

This kid was concentrating super-hard on that goat.

Boy drawing some fancy cows.

Judges take a walk through the "Ring of Excellence", awarding prizes to the ducks.

GIANT turkey! Delicious!

Another group of artists wander through the chickens.

Some brought their own seating for longer studies.

This lady was working on a watercolour.

Have I ever told you how much I love chickens?? With all my heart!

This fella was super noisy.

So handsome!

Did you know that animation great Norman McLaren identified most with chickens above any other animal? Fun fact!

In the food court area I had a meat pie and drew my neighbour eating pizza. When he noticed what I was doing he asked for a peek at my sketchbook. This sparked a really fun conversation!

Farmer girl gives her cow a drink of water.

In the retail area this vendor was selling boots and handbags.

Cows are so giant up close.

And full of personality!

Sheep wearing a fancy outfit to keep his coat clean.

A camera crew interviews a boy and his prized lamb.

Lady shops for a Spicy Italian.
